This poem is one of my favorites because I can relate to it a lot...In this sonnet that I wrote, the speaker is the inner self or the spirit, if you will. The Spirit addresses the Sylvan Mask, which represents the physical and outward portrayal of the self. Basically, the Spirit is concerned that the Mask will not conceal or filter the revealing of it as well. The Spirit contains seas and mountains of emotions and thoughts and statements that reveal its purest state. The Mask is the mouth that speaks, and the body that moves, which drips the seas and chops the mountains of the Spirit piece by piece. As concerned as the Spirit is, it quickly commands the Mask to embroider itself, to be adorned with carvings and sparkles of versatility. The purpose: to portray the Spirit, not in its truest form, but in one of a halved facade.
Calling upon the Sylvan Mask, concerned,
The Apparition said, “Be careful of
Thy polished state, for if uncovered Truth
protest, tenderness laid uncouth -
What will become of me? Latent no more.
No small opening to drip my sea
Or tamed gate to export chopped mountains piece
By piece – my cipher depth, and simplicities
Resonate. So keep thy thick palisade,
Glue thy sparkles in posthaste, embroider
Openings with carvings intricate
To adorn thy canvas brightly tingled
Versatility. Thus be my filtered
Voice, proclaim, a being of tranquility.”
