On Sophocles' Oedipus Rex

Untwist the riddle of the Sphinx, declare

The simple answer in between the lines,

Or else face the bellowing jagged snare

Of her sharp mouth, in tongue and teeth to dine.

Life's wayward friend, Time runs away to call

Fate to draw near, and set determined course—

Unable to evade the meet at all,

Unseen till leaning on third leg, endorse

The gouging of outside mundane perception—

Though ever seeing, consuming verity

Of Oedipus' destiny, expiring pension:

Hero to incestuous orphan, clarity

What dooming Truth that crushed his noble core,

Reveals unknowing bliss, knowledge abhorred.
